Abstract

Historically, Banyumas regency was founded by Raden Joko Kaiman in 1582 after he divided Wirasaba regency into four regions. As the founding father of Banyumas regency, Raden Joko Kaiman can be semiotically interpreted as a superhero in Banyumas context. A man who was brave enough to fight for his people’s dignity can be categorized as a superhero. Raden Joko Kaiman in Barthes’semiotic perspective can function as a sign since this name can have both denotative and connotative meaning.  Barthes’ semiotic theory investigates the process of reading signs and their interpretation in different culture or society. Barthes considers sign as both signifier, the physical form of the sign as people perceive it through their sense and the signified, the meaning that is interpreted. This paper tries to reveal the denotative and connotative meaning of Raden Joko Kaiman in Banyumas culture. Raden Joko Kaiman is considered as the sign that must be interpreted denotatively and connotatively. This study was conducted using library research since it collected reliable data and information through reading, comparing, and analyzing text by relating them to Banyumas context. There are four denotative meaning carried by this sign, namely (i) the son of Raden Harya Banyak Sosro, (ii) the god son of Kiai Mranggi, (iii) the son in law of Adipadi Wargautama, (iv) Adipati Mrapat. Connotation as cultural codes are interpreted through semiotic analysis (Barthes, 1972: 112). Connotatively, Raden Joko Kaiman is interpreted as (i) courage, (ii) strong moral codes, (iii) tolerant to pain, (iv) great sense of responsibility. This study depicts the denotative and connotative meaning of Banyumas superhero in the area of semiotics.
