Abstract

This study examined the appearances of Sri Asih, the first Indonesian fictional female superhero character. First published in 1954 in a self-titled series by Indonesia’s father of comics R. A. Koesasih, Sri Asih offers an authentic iconicity. The heroic feats of traditionally-dressed Sri Asih are conveyed powerfully as woven narratives targeted at the traditionally targeted male readership. Utilizing a mixture of close textual and visual analysis, which recognize comics as a code or system of image and text, this study primarily investigated whether the portrayal of Sri Asih exhibits personal autonomy and superhero identity that challenges conventional representations of a female superhero. The article argues that in terms of Sri Asih's personal autonomy and superhero identity, she could be viewed as having empowering characteristics. Attributed with otherworldly superpowers, Sri Asih is also depicted as a full human being with intellect and independence.
