ABSTRACT

Background : Infants with Low Birth Weight (LBW) more often die or suffer serious health problems especially in developing countries. They often have immature organs because premature birth. This causes LBW to be susceptible to various complications with respiratory distress.

Purpose : The aim of this study to determine the characteristics and outcome of LBW infants with respiratory distress.

Methods : This study used a cross sectional method with retrospective approach. This study used data sample of medical record in 2018 with  a total of 460 LBW infants.

Result : The results showed that the mean of birth weight was 1843.29 (SD 475.55), mean of gestasional age was 33.68 (SD 3.74), mean of maternal age was 30.80 (SD 7.05). LBW infants which respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) (75.4%), asphyxia (30.4%), other apnea of newborn (6.1%), congenital pneumonia (3%), transient tachypnea (0.2%), and other respiratory distress (0.4%). The percentage mortality of LBW in respiratory distress was RDS (21.3%), asphyxia (33.6%), other apnea of newborn (35.7%), congenital pneumonia (14.3%), transient tachypnea (0%), and other respiratory distress (50%).

Conclusion : The main cause of respiratory distress in LBW was RDS.
