Abstract

Background: The government has issued a policy requiring doctors in government health facilities to prescribe generic drugs. The result of the study shows that prescribing of generic drugs in 685 government hospitals in Indonesia was lower than the standard of prescribing generic drugs from WHO. Knowledge level and attitude are important factors influencing the frequency of prescribing generic drugs by doctors. Knowledge level and attitude can be influenced by some factors such as sex, age, and the total practice time of doctors'.

Objective: This study aims to determine the knowledge level and attitude of doctors towards generic drugs and the relationship between factors (sex, age, and length of practice) with knowledge level and attitudes of doctors towards generic drugs.

Methodology: This study used a cross sectional design. The instrument used was a knowledge level and attitude assessment, which was then continued with scoring, univariate analysis, and bivariate analysis by using the Chi-Square test.

Results: The results show that 38.1%; 33.3%; and 28.6% of doctors have good, adequate, and low knowledge level respectively. 92.1% have positive attitude and 7.9% have negative attitude. There is a significant relationship between age and total time of practice with knowledge level (p-value = 0.005; 0.001), but there is no significant relationship between sex and knowledge level (p-value = 0.762). There is no significant relationship between sex, age and total time of practice with attitude (p-value = 0.514; 0.500, 0.736).

Conclusion: Doctors have a good knowledge level and a positive attitude towards generic drugs. There is a significant relationship between age and total time of practice with knowledge level, but there is no relationship between sex and total time of practice. There is no significant relationship between factors of sex, age, and total time of practice with the attitude towards generic drugs.
