Characteristics of Pediatric Patients with Confirmed / Suspected COVID-19: A Case Study at Hospitals around Banyumas Regency

Abstract


Introduction: Every hospital has a way for dealing with the pandemic COVID-19 included in The Secondary Care Hospital around Banyumas. Commonly, these hospitals have limited facilities, beds capacities, and human resources. This research aimed to describe the characteristics of confirmed or suspected COVID-19 in pediatrics patient in Secondary Care Hospital around Banyumas Regency.

Methods: We used cross-sectional design study with retrospective data. The data was collected from medical records between March-November 2020 in children aged 0-17 years (n=37). Patients were hospitalized in three Secondary Care Hospitals at Banyumas Regency that confirmed or suspected COVID-19 as a prior diagnostic. All data were analysed descriptively.

Results: Total of 31 subjects in inclusion criteria consist of 38.71% patients were laboratory-confirmed (n=12) and 61.9% patients (n=19) were suspected COVID-19. There are no comorbidities and mostly have symptom: cough (34.62%) or fever (23.08%) in patients confirmed COVID-19. The numbers of 70.97% patients (n=22) were males and 29.03% (n=9) of females with 74.19% the majority aged ranges between 1-12 years. The means length of stay (LoS) for patients confirmed COVID-19 were 12.40±8.45 days and suspected were 6.26±1.85 days. Oseltamivir and azithromycin were used for >5 days and 3-10 days, respectively, in age range were between 12-17 years. Multivitamin were also used for treatment in all patients.

Conclusions: Pediatric patients mostly diagnosed with suspected COVID-19 and most of them were males. The LoS  for patients confirmed COVID-19 were 12.40±8.45 days and suspected were 6.26±1.85 days. Osetalmivir, azithromycin, and multivitamin were used commonly for their treatment.
