Abstract

Background: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is defined as structural or functional kidney damage for 3 months or longer. 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy induces CKD beginning with decline of renal function. Creatinine serum was usually measured to assess renal function. Moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) has a potential effect to prevent cellular damage in CKD because of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory contents.

Objective: This research aimed to analyze the effect of moringa ethanol extract on serum creatinine level in the 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy rats model.

Methods: This was an experimental study with post-test only with control group design. Twenty-five male white rats were randomly assigned to 5 groups. Group A: sham control, B: subtotal nephrectomy, C, D, and E: treatment groups with 200, 400, 800 mg/kg BW moringa ethanol extract, respectively. On the 15th day after moringa extract or aquades was given, the sham operation was performed in group A, while 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy was performed in groups B, C, D, and E. Then the moringa extract and aquades were given until the 21st day. Blood was taken on the 22nd day after operation for measuring creatinine serum level. Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA (p<0.05).

Results: There were significantly differences between groups on creatinine level (p<0.001). The treatment groups showed lower creatinine level compare to sick control (p<0.05). Creatinine level in group D was the lowest and not-significantly difference compare to sham control (p>0.05).

Conclusion: Moringa ethanol extract prevents the increase of serum creatinine level in the 5/6 subtotal nephrectomy rat model.
