The Effectiveness of Music Therapy in Reducing Insomnia in College Students: A Literature Review

Background: Insomnia is difficulty initiating sleep and maintaining sleep. From the results of existing research, music therapy is effective for reducing insomnia in college students.

Objective: This literature review was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of various types of music therapy to reduce insomnia in college students.

Method: This research was conducted using an online search method from the Google Scholar, PubMed, and ProQuest data centers.

Result: Indian classical music therapy provides new information about the effectiveness of Raag Darbari's music, however, there is no control group. Music therapy with brainwave is a new innovation, however, using a small sample. Furthermore, music therapy uses control group, however, there is subjective. Then bedtime music therapy used active and passive control groups but used a small sample.

Conclusion: There are 4 types of music therapy applied, including: 1) Indian classical music therapy Raag Darbari is suitable for those who like Indian music 2) Music therapy with brainwave using audio that affects brain waves, practical and easy to apply 3) Music therapy using Hijaz Songs, so it is suitable for Muslim students 4) Therapy Lullaby music is suitable for all ages. All of these interventions were effective in reducing insomnia in college students.
