THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE MEANING OF LIFE BETWEEN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING OF THE ELDERLY WITH EMPTY NESTER IN GRENDENG KELURAHAN

Background: The empty nester elderly often feel lonely and left out after being abandoned by their children, this causes the empty nester elderly to feel bored because they only live alone or together with their partner. These feelings can affect the elderly in interpreting themselves and the life experiences they have gone through so that they affect the meaning of life and can interfere with their psychological well-being. This study aims to determine the relationship between the meaningfulness of life and the psychological well-being of the elderly with empty nesters in Grendeng Kelurahan.

Methods: This research is a quantitative study with a cross sectional design. The respondents of this study were 66 elderly empty nesters who lived in Grendeng Village. This study used a Meaning in Life Questionnaire and a Psychological well-being scale (PWBS) questionnaire. Data analysis using Somer's d test.

Results: The results showed that most of the respondents had a moderate level of meaningfulness of life (40.9%). Most of the respondents have high psychological well-being (53%). The test results show that there is a significant relationship between the meaning of life and psychological well-being (p= 0,0001; p< 0,05). The correlation coefficient value of social interaction variables with life satisfaction is (0,736).

Conclusion: The meaning of life is related to the psychological well-being of the empty nester elderly in Grendeng Village.
