LITERATURE REVIEW: EFFECT OF COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (CBT) INTERVENTION ON ANXIETY IN SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Abstract


Background: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are more prone to anxiety than other children. Research shows that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) can be one way to help children with autism manage their anxiety.

Objectives: To systematically assess the quality of articles and synthesize articles related to the effectiveness of CBT interventions on anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Method: This literature review uses published articles from 2016-2020 sourced from the Medline database, Proquest, PubMed Full Text, Google Scholar, Ebsco full text. The keywords that used are cognitive behavioral therapy, autism spectrum disorder, reducing the anxiety and children. The selection of articles follows the PRISMA flow. Assessment of article quality was carried out by supervisors and authors using instruments from the Joanna Briggs Institute.

Results: A total of 3 articles met the criteria for analysis and the quality of the articles was in the good category and showed that manual or modified CBT interventions affected the reduction of anxiety in children with autism spectrum disorder.

Conclusion: CBT is one of the effective interventions to reduce anxiety for children with ASD.
