The Effect of Toilet Training on The Independence of Preschool Children with Down Syndrome: Literature Review

Abstract


Background : Down Syndrome (DS) is a chromosomal disorder that is usually following by intellectual and developmental disabilities. Developmental disabilities that occur can certainly inhibit the independence of children with Down Syndrome. Provided of toilet training is one of the interventions that can be help children with Down Syndrome in practicing independence.

Objective : To assess the quality of articles by systematics and synthesize articles related to the effect of toilet training on the independence of preschool children with Down Syndrome.

Methods : Literature review uses articles published from 2016-2021 sourced by database from Portal Garuda, EBSCO, PubMed, ProQuest, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Springer. The keyword used are down syndrome, preschool, and toilet training. Selection of articles follows PRISMA flow. Assessment of article quality was carried out by supervisor and authors using instrument by Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI).

Result : The three articles that meet the criteria for analysis and the quality of the articles are in good category and show that toilet training interventions can be carried out on children with developmental disabilities or Down Syndrome and can train children to toilet independently.

Conclusion : Toilet training is a one of interventions that can be given to children with Down Syndrome merupakan salah satu intervensi yang dapat diberikan pada anak Down Syndrome to practice independence.
