The presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) will reduce quality of life (QOL) of patients. To improve QOL, it is needed to identify factors related with QOL in diabetic patients. However, the predictors of QOL in diabetic patients in Indonesia is still unclear since the study about it is still a little. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the predictors of QOL in diabetic patients  in Indonesia.

Methods

A total of 435 diabetic patients were included in this study.  The instruments to assess the quality of life, diabetes self-management, diabetes distress, depression, self-efficacy, and family support were used.  Regression analyses were used to examine the factors associated with QOL.

Results

The values of Physical Components Summary and Mental Components Summary were below the general population. The regression analysis showed that the predictors of QOL were education, employment status, number of diabetes-related complications, diabetes self-management, diabetes distress , depression, and self-efficacy.

Conclusion

Our study showed that predictors of QOL are education, employment status, number of diabetes-related complications, diabetes self-management , diabetes distress , depression, and self-efficacy. It needs programs to improve the diabetes self-management, diabetes distress, depression and self-efficacy to improve QOL in diabetic patients in Indonesia.
