Abstract

The assessment of fire preparedness—which is measured by the levels of knowledge, attitude, and practices—is essential for minimizing the risk of fire disaster. This study aimed to assess the preparedness of students, lecturers, and staff in facing fire disaster. The method of this study was analytical survey with cross-sectional approach. The data were analyzed quantitively with SPSS. The samples of the study were 55 students, 30 lecturers, and 15 staff of Institut Medika Drg. Suherman (IMDS). The result showed that the samples’ levels of fire preparedness were 60% for lecturers, 66.7% for students, and 72.7% for staff. In other words, the subjects of this study had medium knowledge level of fire safety. Moreover, their knowledge of the practice of fire safety was also at medium level, while their attitude and awareness of fire risk strongly agreed with the rule and policy that would be designed. However, emergency response planning guidelines had not been formulated yet because the organization’s fire-fighting team had not been formed. Therefore, it can be concluded that fire preparedness of IMDS academic community was inadequate. A commitment between the management and institution members were needed to enhance knowledge and practices of fire safety preparedness.
