Abstract

Background: Covid-19 has become a major health problems worldwide. The high Covid-19 mortality and morbidity rates has put older people, particularly those living in nursing home, to be the most vulnerable group. This study examined Covid-19 preventive behaviors and influencing factors among older people in nursing home.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two governmental nursing homes in Banyumas regency. A total of 66 respondents who met the criteria participated in this study. Health belief model (HBM) constructs, fatalistic beliefs, clinical symptom knowledge and preventive behaviors variables were measured. The data was analyzed using univariate and multiple regression analysis.

Result: Scores of HBM constructs (perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived barriers, perceived benefits, cues to action and self efficacy) were 3.60±0.75, 4.14±0.64, 2.10±0.53, 4.41±0.50, 4.26±0.61 and 4.24±0.55 respectively. Meanwhile, scores of fatalistic beliefs, knowledge and preventive behaviors were 2.89±0.59, 3.53±1.09, and 4.25±0.51 respectively. Regression analysis showed significant predictors of preventive behaviors were perceived susceptibility (p=0.009), perceived barriers (p=0.002), cues to action (p=0.001) and fatalistic beliefs (p=0.043).

Conclusion: Perceived susceptibility, perceived barriers, cues to action and fatalistic beliefs determined Covid-19 preventive behaviors among nursing home residents. Interventions specificaly aiming at modifying those factors is necessary.
