Oral health literacy and its correlation with oral health behaviour among students of Jenderal Soedirman University

Abstract


Background and purpose: Oral health literacy has a role as a medium for health promotion and efforts to prevent oral diseases through changes in oral health behavior. This study aims to determine oral health literacy and its correlation with oral health behavior

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 583 students of Jenderal Soedirman University in 2020. The Indonesian Oral Health Literacy Questionnaire was used to assess oral health literacy. A questionnaire was used to assess oral health behavior which consist of 8 selfcare practice. They are the frequency of eating sweet foods, frequency of snacking before meals, frequency of brushing teeth, time of brushing teeth, changing toothbrushes, the use of cleansing aid, the frequency dental visit and the first action taken when a toothache.

Results: Most of Jenderal Soedirman University have good oral health literacy (90.7%). Oral health literacy of woman students are significantly different than male students’ (p<0,001). Fisher exact tests showed a correlation between oral health literacy and the frequency of snacking, frequency of brushing teeth, time of brushing teeth, and changing toothbrushes. There was no correlation between oral health literacy and the frequency of eating sweet foods, the use of cleansing aid, the frequency of visits to the dentist and the first action taken when a toothache

Conclusion: Oral health literacy needs to be improved to obtain good oral health behaviors. Oral examination and other factors related to oral health literacy are required.
