Abstract
ABSTRACT
Black rice is an important source of functional food to be developed because of their superiority on fiber and anthocyanin content whis is good for human health. Cempo Ireng is one of the local black rice which is known to come from Sleman, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta Province in Indonesia. By now, this rice is no longer planted by farmers due to its unfavorable nature despite its high anthocyanin content. GH 8, 51 and 52 is one of the promising lines of black rice from Cempo Ireng which is susceptible to brown planthoppers (BPH). The induced mutation breeding program is one way to develop superior varieties of BPH resistant of black rice. In this study, the M2 population as a result of 200 Gy gamma ray irradiation from GH 8, 51 and 52 mutant parents will be selected based on the age of flowering, phenotype and lignin content. High lignin content was expected for BPH resistant plant individual selection. The results showed that there was wide variability in the character of plant height and number of seeds per panicle and narrow variability in the character of stem diameter, panicle length, number of panicles per plant, number of 100 seeds weight and number of seed weight per clump.
