Abstract

Among many Indonesian superheroes, Gundala is the remarkable one. He is a superhero that was created by Harya Suraminata (Hasmi). He was announced as a superhero in 1969 through a mini-comic sold by toy traders. The first movie about him was released in 1981 entitled "Gundala: Putra Petir" which received many positive responses from the Indonesian audiences.  Moreover, his figure as a superhero becomes more shinning as the new movie of him was released in 2019 entitled "Gundala: Negeri ini butuh Patriot." His appearances in the movie are easily remembered by people who read his story. Interestingly, the movie watched by many superheroes lovers as it rated 7.2 by Imdb.com.

This research aimed to find out the way of moviemakers in creating Gundala as an Indonesia superhero. Stuart Hall argued in his book entitiled Representation: Cultural Representation and Signifying Practice published on 2007, representation is an essential part of the process by which meaning is produced and exchanged between members of the culture. By using the representation theory, the researcher analyzed the occurrence of superheroes' characteristics in the figure of Gundala. The results showed that Gundala has many characteristics of superheroes especially that adapted from American superheroes as the adaptation of it has great impacts on the succession of the process of Gundala to be a well-known Indonesian superhero.
