Abstract

A superhero is usually labelled with certain stereotypes such as good looking, brave, skillful etc. These stereotypes are socialized by various forms of works like film, cartoon, animation, comic, action figures and others. These socializations are done to make people believe with the created stereotypes attached to the superhero. For that reason, in many forms of works we always find those stereotypes of the superhero. Lately, some forms of works dismantle those stereotypes by creating different stereotype of a superhero. One of the works which is clear to deconstruct those stereotypes is a character of Po in Kungfu panda, in which this character deconstructs the stable and accepted stereotypes. Kungfu Panda is an animation produced by Paramount Pictures in 2008. It has three serial animations, and this analysis only focuses on the first serial entitled Kungfu Panda 1. This analysis uses content analysis to analyze how the text (Kungfu Panda) deconstructs the stereotypes of the superhero by highlighting the figure of the superhero (in this case the character of Po). In most socialized and created stereotypes the figure of superhero is presented as someone who is good looking, brave, skillful, superpower. Kungfu Panda deconstructs these stereotypes by presenting the character of Po who is fat, lazy, slow, talk active, coward, unskillful and unconfident.
